Applying for family reunification

A beneficiary of subsidiary protection can apply for family reunification.

Some family members of a beneficiary of subsidiary protection are entitled to stay in Belgium. To obtain the right to stay in Belgium, they have to contact the Belgian diplomatic post in the country where they are staying.

The family members concerned are:

  • the spouse or partner
  • unmarried children under 18
  • disabled dependent children over 18

During the 5 year period of limited right of residence, these family members will receive a residence permit valid for the same period of time as the residence permit of the beneficiary of subsidiary protection.

When the beneficiary of subsidiary protection is authorised to stay for an unlimited period of time, his/her family members will at first be authorised to stay for a period of 3 years, and then also for an unlimited period of time.
