Obtaining Belgian nationality

Beneficiaries of subsidiary protection can obtain Belgian nationality.

The two most common procedures are:

  • Naturalisation. Requirements are: to be at least 18 years old and to have resided legally in Belgium for at least 3 years.
  • A declaration of nationality. In this case, requirements are: to have resided in Belgium for at least 7 years and be allowed to stay for an unlimited period of time, or to be married to a Belgian national and have lived with him/her for at least 3 years (or 6 months in some cases).

When a beneficiary of subsidiary protection obtains Belgian nationality, his/her children who are under 18 and of whom he/she has parental responsibility will also obtain Belgian nationality.
