Working in Belgium

A beneficiary of subsidiary protection is allowed to work inBelgium.

  • During the 5 year period of limited stay, he/she has to apply for a work permit known as a “C permit”. This permit is valid for a limited period of time and for all salaried occupations.
  • When he/she is authorised to stay for an unlimited period of time, he/she no longer needs a work permit.

A beneficiary of subsidiary protection who wishes to establish him/herself as a self-employed person while he/she is still only authorised to stay for a limited period of time, has to apply for a “self-employed permit” (carte professionnelle/beroepskaart) with the municipal authorities of his/her place of residence. This permit is issued by the Department of Economic Authorisations of the Ministry of Economy.
