Applying for family reunification
The recognised refugee’s close relatives can apply for a ‘family reunification visa’ with the Belgian diplomatic post of the country where they are. The application will be processed by the Immigration Department. Relatives referred to here are:
- spouse or partner;
- dependent children who are under 18;
- disabled dependent children who are over 18;
- the recognised refugee’s father and mother, if the recognised refugee is younger than 18 and is not accompanied by an adult who looks after him.

Relatives authorised to stay in Belgium via family reunification obtain a right of residence which is limited to 3 years. After those 3 years the right of residence becomes permanent.
