Ending the refugee status

Recognised refugees may waive their status if they think the reasons which led them to leave their country have ceased to exist, for instance as a result of political change or a change in their personal life.
The consequences are the following:

  • They can stay in Belgium but will be required to obey the same rules as other foreigners staying in Belgium on a regular basis.
  • They can travel to their country of origin and stay there without permission from the CGRS. However, they have to inform the municipal authorities in case of a long-term stay outside Belgian territory.

A beneficiary of subsidiary protection status is a person who has been granted subsidiary protection status. This person is a foreigner who does not meet the conditions to be recognised as a refugee, but who runs a real risk of serious harm in case of return to his/her country of origin.
