Protracted refugee situation (UNHCR term): a large group of refugees who have been in a particularly hopeless situation for a long time (more than five years) in the first host country, where most of them are staying in refugee camps. Although their lives are not necessarily in danger, their fundamental rights and their basic economic, social and psychological needs are affected by their prolonged stay in precarious conditions. It is often very hard for them to get out of this imposed state of dependence.
