After his recognition, a refugee has a limited right of residence in Belgium for a period of five years.
Asylum procedure
Asylum is a form of international protection for
- persons who have left their country of origin because they were persecuted for their nationality, race, political or religious beliefs or membership of a particular social group (the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees);
- persons who are at a real risk of serious harm if they return to their country of origin. Serious harm is the death penalty or execution; torture, inhuman or degrading treatment; a serious threat to life of a citizen by indiscriminate violence in a situation of international or internal armed conflict (subsidiary protection).
