Over the past few months, the number of applicants from El Salvador has increased strongly. This may be due to the very high protection rate for El Salvador. The perception may therefore arise that applicants from El Salvador are almost systematically granted protection status in Belgium.
This is not the case.
We see that more and more applicants from El Salvador are not in need of protection. Besides decisions granting a status, decisions refusing a status were also consistently taken over the last few weeks.
As is the case with persons from other countries, applications from persons from El Salvador are assessed on their individual merits. If there is a need for international protection, refugee status or subsidiary protection status is granted. If there is no need for protection, a refusal decision is taken.
The situation in El Salvador is problematic for various reasons. But the situation is not of such a nature that every person from El Salvador needs international protection.
